Ted Murphy - Belltown Mystery Series
A tuition-free weeklong Young Writers' Workshop accommodates approximately 45 twelve to sixteen year olds, selected competitively through submissions judged by a committee of published writers.

This summer our Prose Workshop leader is Ted Murphy, the author
of the Belltown Mystery Series for young readers.

The popular poet and longtime high school teacher David Surette will inspire our Young Writers in the Poetry Workshop.

2008 Cape Cod Young Writers' Workshop
August 18 - 22, 2008

The Young Writers' Workshop is a week of inspiration, learning, and fun for writers of poetry and prose between the ages of 12 and 16. Classes are held for two hours per day for one week at the Craigville Conference Center in Centerville. Classes are limited to 15 students to allow as much time as possible for each participant. Entries will be judged by a committee from the Cape Cod Writers' Center and students will be chosen based on their writing samples. To apply, complete the application below and mail with your writing samples by May 1, 2008. Applicants will be notified by mail by May 30, 2008. There is no fee to apply. On acceptance a $10.00 registration fee is requested; however, no student will be turned away for an inability to pay.

TED MURPHY - YOUNG WRITERS' WORKSHOP PROSE COURSE

Ted Murphy

COURSE DETAILS:
Have you ever been caught writing stories in math class? Or maybe you're that quiet kid in the back of the class not saying much to anyone but speaking volumes with your pen whenever there is a chance to write in class? There are all kinds of writers and they are all welcome in this writing workshop about coming up with creative ideas, writing them down, and being supported in a safe environment - fellow writers and a teacher who will provide positive feedback as well as thoughtful suggestions. By the end of the week, there will have been an experience of lot of laughs, newly-made friends, and most importantly, every young writer will realize that he/she has their own unique voice and to keep picking up that pen and using that voice in one of the most powerful ways - WRITING!

BIO:
TED (T.M.) MURPHY, a graduate of Boston College, resides in Falmouth. He is the author of the acclaimed Belltown Mystery Series for kids 10-14. DAVID R. SURRETTE - YOUNG WRITERS' WORKSHOP POETRY COURSE

David R. Surette

COURSE DETAILS:
Writing the lyric-narrative poem allows us to use our skills in setting a scene so sharp, creating characters so vivid that the poem will burst into lyricism, transforming the experience into poetry! We will discover the emotional sparks of our writing, seek the sensual language that will draw the reader in, and employ strategies to push the experience to lyrical heights. I will bring examples of both classical and modern lyric-narrative poems. Students may bring their poems to the first class and I will bring writing exercises to spark new poems. The students should leave with at least one lyrical narrative and the skills to write more.

BIO:
David R. Surette is the author of two books of poetry "Easy to Keep, Hard to Keep In" and "Young Gentlemen's School." He has taught English and creative writing for over twenty years in both the Waltham, MA and East Bridgewater, MA school systems. He was the faculty advisor for Waltham High Schools literary magazine The Abstract and has been the advisor to East Bridgewater's literary magazine "The Viking Saga" for the last five years. Surette is the co-host of Poetribe, a poetry series that meets in southeastern Massachusetts.
